IDEAS
Adults Don’t Exist
h/t to George Mack for this week’s idea:
Everyone knows that one person from uni—always hungover, coasting through class without direction.
When the time came to choose a career path they had no clue what to do with their lives. So they said:
“I think I’ll just become a teacher…”
Now, cast your mind back to when you were in school. Teachers were Gods.
They had infinite knowledge across multiple subjects. They ran the classroom with an iron fist. They could do no wrong.
We worshipped our teachers.
However, turns out the teacher and the person from uni are the same.
We’re old enough now to realise that our teachers actually didn’t have a clue. They were just figuring it out like the rest of us.
This is not a snipe at teachers. It’s a principle that highlights how most (if not all) adults are just tall toddlers.
Adults don’t actually exist. And this is incredibly empowering.
If no one has it figured out, what’s standing in our way from doing something crazy? Taking the leap to start a company? Inventing something new?
Nothing, really. Just our own insecurities.
INSIGHTS

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI and one of the most hardcore technologists in the space, launched Safe Superintelligence (SSI) on June 19th after leaving OpenAI. Per their website, “SSI is our mission, our name, and our entire product roadmap, because it is our sole focus.”
Luca’s take: I think building SSI is a worthy mission that the human race should support. The problem with Ilya’s new venture though is the question of how they’ll catch up with OpenAI. Startups have to move fast and focussing on safety naturally slows progress. Hopefully, that doesn’t stop them from releasing anything in the first place.
