What Frame Of Mind Will You Choose?

Oppenheimer's Oscars Rout, xAI open sources Grok, Apple Vision Pro used for surgery, Jeff Bezos on product vs marketing and much more...

Hey everyone,

Welcome to your Sunday Space, where I distil the best ideas, resources and principles on the internet for you to digest.

If you find something thought-provoking, feel free to share it with a friend.

I’m off to Bali for two weeks to break the last bit of the UK winter. Although I’ll be bathing on the Balinese beaches, there will be no disruption to our regular Sunday Space programming.

I hope you enjoy today’s read.

IDEAS
What Frame Of Mind Will You Choose?

Carol Dweck’s pioneering psychological theory on Growth Mindset (outlined in her seminal book, Mindset) empowers us to overhaul how we approach acquiring intelligence.

Dweck explains why it’s not just our abilities and talent that bring us success but also whether we approach tasks with a fixed or growth mindset.

She differentiates between the two mindsets as follows:

A Growth Mindset believes that intelligence can be developed.

This leads to a desire to learn and, therefore, a tendency to…

  • Embrace challenges.

  • Persist in the face of setbacks.

  • See effort as the path to mastery.

  • Learn from criticism.

  • And find lessons and inspiration in the success of others.

As a result, they reach ever-higher levels of achievement, which gives them a greater sense of free will.

This is compared to a Fixed Mindset, which believes intelligence is static.

This leads to a desire to look smart and, therefore, a tendency to…

  • Avoid challenges.

  • Give up easily.

  • See effort as fruitless.

  • Ignore useful negative feedback.

  • And feel threatened by the success of others.

As a result, they may plateau early and achieve less than their full potential, which confirms their deterministic view of the world.

The simple question is then: What mindset will you choose?

RESOURCES
What I consumed this week…

…From around the web

Nolan’s biopic grabbed a mind-blowing seven Oscars, including:

  1. Best picture

  2. Best director

  3. Best actor

  4. Best supporting actor

  5. Original score

  6. Cinematography

  7. Film editing

For me, this is a true piece of art that is getting paid its dues in the big time.

The cinematography, soundtrack, and performances are out of this world. They yank you into Oppenheimer’s world and don’t let you out until well after the film has ended.

Most of all, it’s an incredible story — one about the man who built the thing that could destroy the world and how he grapples with the consequences of his terrifyingly fantastic invention for the rest of his life.

Christopher Nolan and his team deserve all their praise — they’ve inspired the next generation of creators and inventors to push the boundaries of science even further for the benefit of humanity.

Queue the latest chapter in Elon vs Sam.

The move could prove the ultimate middle finger to OpenAI (or, as Elon called them, ClosedAI), but other incentives drive this move.

We’ve seen the “open-source our models” manoeuvre from companies like Meta and Mistral—primarily due to their inability to keep pace with the closed-source proprietary models like GPT-4, Gemini, and even Claude.

Grok-1 is comparable to Llama-2 70B and GPT-3.5, so this is Elon’s way of levelling the playing field with OpenAI—or, at least, trying to.

A surgical team member at Cromwell Hospital in London used the device to assist with spinal surgery procedures.

It’s an incredible feat—AR/VR (or “spatial computing”) tech will undoubtedly make human tasks, like surgery, more precise and effective.

It’s great to see medical professionals pushing technological boundaries, as we mentioned last week.

There are already a host of medical apps being developed specifically for Vision Pro, indicating that this will only become more ubiquitous among other medical procedures.

Maybe, with a sophisticated enough app coupled with AI direction, we won’t even need doctors to perform our own medical procedures in the near future.

TOOLS
The No-Code x AI Bootcamp

If you're a regular here, you’ll know I’ve been through the Bootcamp myself. I'm not big on courses, and I recommend even fewer.

That speaks volumes about this one. It was a game-changer.

I’ve always been 'almost there.’ Full of ideas, yet stuck at the starting line, watching others on Twitter launch their products and succeed.

Then, I joined the Bootcamp. It completely changed my perspective.

I discovered the true power of building with No-Code and launched my MVP in a weekend.

I’m no longer hampered by analysis paralysis and have a roadmap of ideas and products I plan to build.

If you’re feeling stuck like I was, this Bootcamp is the way to break free.

Quote I’m Pondering

"For students with the growth mindset, it doesn’t make sense to stop trying."
