The Startup Paradox

Plus: GPT-4o fine-tuning, AI price/performance, Unspoken expectations and more...

Hey everyone,

This is your Sunday Space, where I serve up the best ideas, tools and resources I’ve found each week as we explore the technology shaping the future.

This was written from the melting pot of a city that is Budapest. I hope you all have a great summer long weekend.

If you find something thought-provoking, forward it to a friend.

IDEAS
The Startup Paradox

Something I think about a lot:

Your startup is bound to fail, but you have to believe it won’t.

Starting a startup involves balancing two contradicting points of view:

  1. Reality—the odds of success are less than 10%.

  2. Optimism—Believing you can succeed against those odds.

These diametrically opposed viewpoints (and their accompanying emotions) are inescapable, no matter how good your product or marketing strategy is.

Balancing them is the key to success. That’s the paradox of starting a startup.

Model Pricing per ArtificialAnalysis

OpenAI has launched native fine-tuning capabilities for GPT-4o. This allows developers to customise the best OpenAI models using specific datasets, enhancing performance for tailored applications. Fine-tuning will cost $25/million tokens and $3.75 for inputs / $15 for outputs.

Luca’s take: OpenAI has been prolific with its release cycle, never spending too long from the AI zeitgeist. Fine-tuning will entrench GPT-4o into enterprise workflows even more.

But it comes at a high price point compared to open-source—Llama 3.1 is half the input/output cost and can be fine-tuned for free.

The key question: Is fine-tuning GPT-4o economically sustainable long-term?

THOUGHTS
Quote I’m Pondering

This week’s quote has been floating around the internet recently:

“Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments.”

In other words, closed mouths don’t get fed.
